First League Game Sunday," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5:  Sunday is the day, June 1st, when the first official softball game between the teams entered in the Jewish Softball League sponsored by the Southwestern Jewish Press will be played on the diamond at the Horace Mann Playground. June 19, 1947—"Yo-Ma-Co," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: Another fine book review was presented this time by that eminent Harold Keen, highlighting an enjoyable evening at the last meeting The well-known book, Thieves in the Night, dealt on terroristic activities in Palestine, and Harold made it highly interesting, clear in detail before an enthused gathering...All of us wish Sam Brenes a speedy recovery from his illness.

October 1949—"Brenes Return from Minneapolis," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 3:  Mr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Brenes of 3027 Bancroft Street and their sons, Roger and Philip, are returned from a mont'hs vacation spent with relatives and friends in Minneapolis. Enroute the Brenes enjoyed motoring through the many Northwest and Middleeast States and stopped to see the scenic wonders and National Parks. They arrived in Minneapolis in time to visit with her sister and family and with his brother, Irving Brenes and his family, before the Irving Brenes' left for a visit with their family here in San Diego.  The Samuel Brenes', after stopping in San Francisco, on their return trip, arrived home in time to take part in the festivities and entertainment accorded his brother, Irving and his family and to enjoy visits with Mr. Brenes' out of town sisters, Mrs. Sy Fein and Mrs. Wilfred Goodman.

December 2, 1949—"San Diego Lasker Lodge B'nai B'rith," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5:  A large group of members attended the last meeting of San Diego Lasker Lodge No. 370 B'nai Brith last Monday evening, November 28th at Temple Center to hear detailed reports by the delegates to the recently held District Convention in Los Angeles.  William B. Schwartz acted as moderator for the reporting delegates, who gave very interesting highlights on the activities of the convention.  Zel Greenberg reported on social actiivties, Morrie Kraus gave the report on Hillel, Eli Levenson reported on A.D.L. and Harry Mallen gave his report on the elections of the convention. Eddie Breitbard reported on A.Z.A. and the State of Israel Project, while Mr. Henry Weinberger was heard on Wilderscope and Young Men's Activities. Mr. Schwartz finished the reporting on per capitations and impressions.  The meeting then progressed to the annual election of officers for the coming year. The following were were elected to hold office for 1950: Morrie Kraus, president; Jerry Freedman, 1st vice-president; Lou Mogy, 2nd vice pres.; Ralph Feldman, warden; Zel Greenberg, guardian; Al Doctor, treasurer; San Brenes, recording secretary, and Ed Baranov, financial and corresponding secretary. Additional trustees elected for a three year term are Sid Goldstein and Morris Douglas. Elected as Chaplain is William B. Schwartz. Plans are in the formative stage for Installation of these officers, the Installation to take place Sunday evening, January 8, 1950 in the Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel.  Jerry Freedman is in charge and the program for that event will be announced at a later date. Mr. Henry Weinberger, past Grand President of District No.4 and Mr. Eli Levenson, past President of San Diego Lodge and a member of the Executive Board of Grand Lodge Dist. No. 4 will be the installing officers. A pre-installation dinner will take place at 6:00 p.m. in the El Cortez Hotel.

December 30, 1949—"S.D. Lasker Lodge Bnai Brith Installation Set for January 8," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8: An outstanding event in Bnai Brith annals will take place Sunday, January 8, at 8 p.m., Don Room of the El Cortez Hotel when newly elected officers of San Diego Lasker Lodge will be installed.  The 1950 administration comprises Morrie Kraus, president: Jerry Freedman, first vice president; Lou Mogy, second vice president; Ralph Feldman, warden; Zel Greenberg guardian; Al Doctor, treasurer; Sam Brenes, recording secretary; Ed Baranov, financial and corresponding secretary; Sid Goldstein and Morrie Douglas, trustees, and Bill Schwartz, chaplain.  Holdover trustees are Marshall Naiman, Manny Silberman and Harry Wax.  Eli Levenson, member of the Grand Lodge Executive Committee, will be the installing officer. He will be assisted by Henry Weinberger, past Grand Lodge president. They plan to streamline the ceremony. Immediately following the installation there will be dancing to the music of Bill Brandenberg and his orchestra, the same good music that was available at the lodge's dinner dance at Casper's Ranch. Refreshments will also be served during the evening. Prior to the installation ceremony, a dinner will be held  at 6 p.m. sharp in the Don Room to honor the incoming and outgoing officers. The complete cost of the prime rib meal will be $3.25 per person. A festive party is planned. All members of Bnai Brith, as well as the community at large, are cordially invited to the installation at 8 p.m. and those who desire reservations for the dinner  may do so by contacting Jerry Freedman at R-3817, chairman of the evening. It is hoped that there will be a large turnout at both events that evening because this promises to be a memorial (sic, memorable) occasion.

February 24, 1950—"Tifereth Israel Men's Club," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: On Tuesday, February 7, the Tifereth Israel Men's Club elected the following officers and board members: President, Zel Greenberg; 1st Vice President, Sid Smith; 2nd Vice President, Joe Spatz; Treasruer, Sam Druskin; Financial Secretary, Ben Levenson, and Recording Secretary, Moe Hershey. Members elected to the board for a two-year term are Bob Cheron and Al Young. Those elected to serve for one year are Sam Brenes, Harry Brussels, Frank Sugarman, and Moss Adddleson.

2) "Magic Carpet Day, Sunday, April 30th: Be A Worker or Stay at Home Until A Worker Calls on You," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 16:  Over 150 "Modern Miracle Workers" are expected to participate in San Diego's "Operation Magic Carpet" this Sunday, April 30th, Morris Douglas, chairman of the day, stated. Gathering for instructions at Beth Israel Center, the workers will breakfast (courtesy of the Jolly Sixteen) at 9:30 a.m., receive their lists and be off to knock on doors on behalf of the "Keep the Miracle Alive" Campaign of the United Jewish Fund.  "Magic Carpet Day," said Douglas, "is an effort to dramatically call to the attention of the Jews of San Diego, the needs of the Jews of Europe, Africa and the Moslem countries, as well as Israel, and to have the greatest possible coverage in the history of any campaign. We hope that our Miracle Workers will cover over 1200 prospects on this one day."  All organizations have helped in the recruitment of workers. July 7, 1950—"Father and Son Fashion Show," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Members of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue will participate in an evening of frivolity supplied by the Men's Club of the Synagogue. A unique fashion show will be held on Wednesday, July 12 at 8:30 p.m. in the Synagogue at 30th and Howard Srts.  Chairman of the evening is Joe Spatz. M. S. Berlin is in charge of refreshments.  Fathers who will model with their sons are Ben Gordon, Bernie Rudin, Sam Fischer, Joe Kader, Jack Prager, Julius Levine, Eddie Breitbard, Al Newman, Al Doctor, Eddie Baranov, Sam Druskin, Sam Brenes, Zel Greenberg and Moss Addleson.  Comedy will be provided by Isadore Teacher, Moe Hershey and Herman Tulchinsky.  MOdels will show clothes loaned by Chenkin's Youth Shop, Bill Solof's, De Sure's Men's Store, Federal Clothiers and Kelly Tailoring Co. The entire congregation of Tifereth Israel Synagogue is welcome. Refreshments will be served following the program.

October 20, 1950—"Boxing Show to Feature Fund Drive for New Center," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: A Boxing charity show featuring top names has been billed for the Coliseum Saturday night, November 4th by the Tifereth Israel Synagogue Men's Club to raise funds for building a new Youth Center at 30th and Howard Streets.  Baby Ortiz, lightweight champion of Mexico, has been signed by Matchmaker Jack O'Dowd for the main event. O'Dowd is seeking an outstanding Pacific Coast lightie to pit against the classy Oritiz.  Ortiz has just returned from a highly successful invasion of Australia during which he decisioned the Aussie champion, Jack Hassen and scored three other wins by knockouts without suffering a loss. In addition to the 10-round main boxing event, there will be a six-round semi-windup and two prelims.  Tickets for the show go on sale Monday at DSeSures Men Store, 7th and Broadway; Kelly Tailoring Co., 347 W. Broadway; Federal Clothiers, 220 Broadway and at the Coliseum box office, 15th and E Streets, F-1319.  Tickets for the charity fray are scaled at $10 and $5 for ringside. However, fight fans will have an opportunity to buy 2,000 bleacher seats at $1.24. The Youth center plans call for a $150,000 building. Tickets will also be handled by members of the Men's Club committee composed of Zel Greenberg (chairman), Sid Smith, Joe Spatz, Moe J. February 16, 1951— Lou Robbins, "News of the Fox," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: ...February 9, Boy Scout Troop 99, conducted services  at Tifereth Israel. In charge of the services was Rabbi Monroe Levens. John Kluchin, president of the Samuel I. Fox Lodge, presented the boys with a bugle, also Mr. Sam Brenes, Boy Scout chairman of the Lasker Lodge, presented the troop with a check for $25.00 to put towards their buying fund....

May 25, 1951—"United Synagogue Holds Conference," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: The full program for the Sixth Annual Conference of the United Synagogue of America and the National Women's League, Southern California Region, was being formulated this week following individual and joint planning sessions of the two organizations representing 25 Conservative congregations in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. More than 500 delegates are expected to attend the conference Sunday, May 27th, at Sinai Congregation, Fourth and New Hampshire in Los Angeles, where an afternoon of seminars and business meetings will precede the evening dinner featuring Dr. Max Routtenberg, executive vice president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America as guest speaker. ...The following will attend as delegates from Tifereth Israel Synagogue of San Diego: M.S. Bringing back a sun tan were the Harry Snyders; Ben Cohens; Sam Brenes and family; the Al Doctor family; the George Solomons; Mrs. Sam Solomon and children; the Ben Stolurows (Mrs. S. is dancing again); the Lew Liptons and daughter; the Sam Addlesons, and Sam Rassins.

March 21, 1952—"Tifereth Israel News," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8: At the regular Sabbath Evening Services on Friday, March 21, at 8:15 p.m., Rabbi Levens will address the Congregation. Cantor Joseph Cysner and the Choir will officiate. Mr. and Mrs. A. Brenes will be honored on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary. Members of the family who will serve as hosts at the Oneg Shabbat, are: Mr. and Mrs. Sy Fein, Mr. and Mrs. Irving Brenes, Mr. and Mrs. W.H. Goodman, Mr. and Mrs. Rubin Aved, and Mr. and Mrs. Sam Brenes.  Sabbath Morning Services on March 22 will begin at 8:30 a.m.. Mr. and Mrs. A. Brenes will be hosts following the service. The Family and Youth Service will take place at 10:30 a.m., after which will follow a lunch for all members of the Junior Congregation. ** Rabbi Levens will deliver the sermon at the Sabbath Evening Services on friday, March 28, at 8:15 p.m. with Cantor and Choir officiating. Hosts for the Oneg Shabbat will be: Mr. and Mrs. Louis Addleson, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Addleson, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Addleson, and members of their families in honor of the arrival of two baby boys.  Sabbath Morning service at 9 :00 a.m. Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kader announce the Bar Mitzvah of their son, Errol. Brenes—Aug. 27, 1910-Dec. 9, 2005. Esther R. Brenes, 95, of San Diego died Friday. She was born in Minneapolis and was a homemaker. She was a member of the B ' nai B ' rith Birdie Stodel Chapter and the Hebrew Home for the Aged. Survivors include her sons, Roger Brenes of San Diego and Phillip Brenes of Vancouver, Wash.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Services: 3 p.m. today, Greenwood Mortuary, Interstate 805 and Imperial Avenue, San Diego. Entombment: Greenwood Sholom Mausoleum. "Obituaries," San Diego Jewish Times, page 25:  BRENES, ESTHER RUTH, 95, born Aug. 27, 1910 in Mineapolis, MN and passed away Dec. 9, 2005 in San Diego. After marrying her childhood sweetheart Samuel Brenes in 1935, the couple moved to the San Joaquin Valley in California, where their sons Roger and Phillip were born. The family moved to San Diego in 1941. Mrs. Brenes loved athletics, music, live theater, cinema and the world around her. A woman of incredible strength and faith, her passion for life included a deep devotion to her religion. Shje and her family have been members of Tifereth Israel since 1948, where she was active in sisterhood, Hadassah, B'nai B'rith (Birdie Stodel chapter) and YoMaCo (Young Married Couples.)  She also volunteered at the Hebrew Home for the Aged. With Sam's death in 1992, after 57 years of marriage, her role became that of matriarch, mentor and teacher to the generations behind her. She is survived by her sons, Roger Brenes (Lana) of San Diego and Dr. Philip Brenes (Judi) of Vancouver, WA, four grandchildren and for great-grandchildren. Services were held at Greenwood Memorial Park. The family asks that those who might wish to honor her make donations to the Minyan Fund at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, 6660 Cowles Mt. Blvd, San Diego, CA 92119-1899.
