Palestinian demonstrations for Saddam
are music to ears of Israel's friends

San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, March. 2, 2001

Washington (special) -- Any time a new president takes office in the United States, there is
concern in the Jewish community and among friends of Israel about what
policies his administration will follow in the Middle East. In particular
there has been worry about President George W. Bush because his father,
former President George H. Bush, had such a tense relationship with the
Israelis.

After Palestinians scheduled two "days of rage" to protest the joint U.S.-
British bombing of anti aircraft facilities in Iraq, Morton Klein, national
president of the Zionist Organization of the America, wrote to the new
U.S. President: "Despite the nearly $900-million in aid that the U.S. Has
given to the Palestinian Arabs since 1994, they continue to support
America's most bitter enemy, Iraq. Is this a proper and moral use of U.S.
taxpayers' dollars?"

Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), the ranking Democrat on the House
International Relations Committee, voiced support for the Feb. 16 air raid
on Iraq, saying: that Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's"past behavior has
followed a pattern of rebuilding his resources to challenge us and our
allies in the region, and we must continue to oppose his effort to rebuild
Iraq's military capabilities, particularly weapons of mass destruction.
We must do all in our power to stop Saddam's relentless drive to rebuild
these weapons that threaten all of us." -- Donald H. Harrison
