Feinstein proposes new commission to keep voting technology current

San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Jan. 5, 2001

Washington D.C. (special) --Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif) has teamed up with Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky and Democratic Senator Robert Toricelli of New Jersey to sponsor an "Election Reform Act." The legislation would set up a permanent federal commission "that studies how elections are administered, makes recommendations on how to improve them, and provides funds to enable local jurisdictions to implement their recommendations."
Feinstein said the commission would have four commissioners appointed to four-year terms by the President with the advice and consent of the Senate.

"The situation in Florida with different counties using different equipment, different standards and different methodologies in the conduct of the election is a clear indication that reform is needed," Feinstein said in a press release. "Although elections are within the purview of the states, if the federal government can provide incentives and financial assistance to update equipment and administration to ensure that every vote counts, that would be a giant step forward." -
