Jerry Abramson, the popular former mayor of Louisville, was successful
last November winning approval of a proposal consolidating the governments
of the City of Louisville and surrounding Jefferson County into a "metro-city
government."
Currently in private practice as an attorney, Abramson had been barred
by term limits from succeeding himself as Louisville mayor. Now however,
Abramson is considered the odds-on favorite to become the first mayor of
the new super-government after elections in 2002.
While he hasn't announced his candidacy yet, he hasn't been exactly
coy about his interest in the job. When a friend from University of Kentucky
college days, Louisville resident Harry Jacobson-Beyer, urged Abramson
to run, Abramson promptly persuaded Jacobson-Beyer to volunteer in his
campaign. -- Donald
