San Diego (Special) -- Rep. Bob Filner (D-San Diego) assisted by the top aide in his district office, Francisco Estrada, are trying to pull together an ongoing Latino-Jewish alliance. Several representatives of the American Jewish Committee and the Metropolitan Area Advisory Committee, a Latino-dominated social services agency, met together Nov. 8 at the University of San Diego to discuss ways and means. "As a Jewish American, I have experienced hate directed at me based on religion," said Filner. "I represent a district with a large Latino population and know that many of my Latino constituents, friends and colleagues, also have experienced discrimination and been the targets of hatred. The purpose of opening up a dialogue between these two communities is to find common ground -- which I believe there is much -- and see if we can build on that common ground for the betterment of the entire San Diego community." Following the initial meeting, Gary Rotto, the AJC regional director, and Roger Cazares, MAAC chief executive officer, agreed to bring back recommendations in December on how the dialogue may proceed. Among those at the initial meeting were, for AJC, Chuck Nathanson, Fay
Crevoshay, Gracia Pick and John Weil. MAAC participants included Linda
Lagrette, Enrique Morones and Chula Vista City Councilwoman Mary Salas.
