Lieberman returns to restaurants, diners
to schmooze with voters of Connecticut

San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Dec. 29, 2000

Danbury, Conn (special) -- Sen. Joseph Lieberman was back last week meeting voters at Connecticut diners. He thanked them for their decision to reelect him to the U.S. Senate even while he was running as the Democratic candidate for vice president of the United States. A C-Span camera crew caught numerous voters telling Lieberman they were sorry he hadn't won as vice president, but were glad he would still be in the Senate.

One lady told Lieberman she loved the name of his wife, Hadassah, and he replied that was the Hebrew name of the Queen Esther in the Bible. The lady said she was unaware of that. Yup, replied Lieberman, that's why he treats his wife "like a queen."

He also revealed that while he was losing his vice presidential contest, his daughter, Hani, was being elected as her school's student body vice president. So there is a vice president in the Lieberman household after all, he said proudly.

Lieberman already has authored several books, including In Praise of Public Life, which came out shortly before he was selected as the running mate of Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore. So perhaps it should not come as a surprise that Lieberman told Connecticut voters his immediate plans during the winter recess of Congress was to speak into a tape recorder about the many wonderful experiences he had on the campaign trail. -- Donald H.
