Wolfsheimer, Nussbaum split on
Del Mar Fair hikes

San Diego Jewish Press-Heritage, Nov, 24. 2000

Del Mar, CA (special) -- Allies on many other issues, commissioners Louis Wolfsheimer and Barry Nussbaum split on the question of whether parking and admission fees should be boosted at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Wolfsheimer was on the winning side of a 5-1 vote to hike admission by $1 to $9.50 for adults, and to also increase parking on the fairgrounds by $1 to $6. Another commissioner who is a member of the Jewish community, Alex Szekaly, was absent from the meeting.

Nussbaum argued unsuccessfully that senior citizens should be given a special break on prices because many of them are on fixed incomes. Wolfsheimer and the rest of the board said even with the increase, the $9.50 admission at the fairgrounds is a good entertainment value for seniors compared to other attractions in town. The increase in fees was deemed necessary because of rising electricity rates and falling off-track betting revenues.

Wolfsheimer said the Del Mar Fairgrounds is "one of the largest users in the county of energy in the summer months because of the race track meet and the fair."

Nussbaum, a Democrat appointed by Gov. Gray Davis, and Wolfsheimer, a Republican appointed by former Gov. Pete Wilson, have been working closely on the Del Mar Fair's master development plan. Nussbaum is in the construction business, while Wolfsheimer has represented various developers before the San Diego City Council and other bodies. Nussbaum heads an ad hoc citizen's committee giving advice on how the fairgrounds should be physically revamped, while Wolfsheimer sits on the formal committee for master planning. -- Donald H.
