Sue Braun, one of two Jewish members of the San Diego School Board,
is endorsing Katherine Nakamura to be her successor in the District B election
next year. Nakamura is an attorney, who has been serving as an assistant
secretary of the corporate board which runs the University of San Diego.
In a note to HERITAGE, Braun said of Nakamura: "She is a lot like me, an 'over-worker,' so I know she will do a good job." Braun, fellow Jewish community member Ron Ottinger and Ed Lopez typically have been on the prevailing side of a continuing 3-2 board split in support of the policies of School Superintendent Alan Bersin, with John de Beck and Frances O'Neill Zimmerman on the minority side. Nakamura has served as a vice chair of the Union of Pan Asian Communities, a board member of the American Civil Liberties Union, and was one of the citizens appointed to a board helping police determine what changes it should make in its deadly force policies. She and husband Kotaro Nakamura, an architect, have two children enrolled in San Diego public schools. One goes to Hearst Elementary School in the Del Cerro area; the other attends Muirlands Middle School in La Jolla. - Donald H. Harrison |
