July 11, 1946—"Congregation Tifereth Israel," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 3—It was Ratner day last Saturday at Congregation Tifereth Israel as a Jewish name was given to the newly born daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Seymour Ratner and granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Marco Ratner. Great-uncles Nate Ratner and Joe Spatz came especially for the celebration. Kiddush and refreshments were served after the services by the Ratner family and also by Mrs. Shifferson in memory of her husband's yahrzeit...

March 6, 1947—"Mary Spatz Dies at Age of 70," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: Mrs. Mary Spatz, a 27-year-resident of San Deigo, passed away Wednesday, February 26th, at the age of 70 after a brief illness. Mrs. Spatz resided at 4242 Central Avenue. Services were conducted from the Merkeley-Austin Mortunary on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. with Rabbi Ephraim Siegel officiating. Burial was at the Home of Peace Cemetery...Surviving are her daughters Mrs. Marco Ratner of San Deigo and Mrs. Ann Tax of Alhambra; sons, Herman of New York and Joe M. of San Diego, and six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

July 1949—"Jewish War Veterans Post 185," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: With the election of Manuel S. Fisher to Post Commander, Harry aronoff to Senior Vice Commander, Sam Klug to Junior Vice Commander, Rabbi Morton J. Cohn as Chaplain, Ralph Feldman as Judge Advocate, Allan Lame as Quartermaster, David Brooks as Adjutant and Dave Frank as Officer of the Day, the Jewish War Veterans Post 185 began an active year. Under the guiding hand of Harry aronoff, that hard working team of Aronoff, Joe Shiffrenson and Joe Spatz planned and completed several fund raising affairs. The next affair a Card Party at Temple Center at 8 p.m. on July 10th is the next Post venture...

August 1949—"J.W.V. Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 2: ...During the baseball season, 25 hospitalized veterans are guests of the Post and Auxiliary every Saturday the San Diego Padres are in San Diego. Mr. William Starr, Padre president, donated an entire section of box seats and the ladies see to it that the boys get hot dogs, soda pop, and the usual refreshments conducive to an enjoyable afternoon. Joe Spatz from the Post and Teresa Furst, Auxiliary, are regular workers on this project and receive excellent assistance from the membership—Binnie Brooks.

December 2, 1949—"Tifereth Israel Elects Officers," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: The Tifereth Israel Synagogue held its annual election of officers on Thursday, Nov. 17. December 16, 1949—1) "Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 26:...Plans are complete for the gala New Year's Eve party for post and Auxiliary members and their guests. Joe Spatz of the Post, who is in charge of arrangements for the party, announces that the affair will be held in the Exchange Hall, Meade avenue at 30th Street beginning at 8:00 p.m. with a catered roast turkey dinner. Entertainment and dancing willbe part of the evening's fun...

February 10, 1950—"News of the Fox," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 4: This column to be called "News of the Fox," will tell you of the activities of the Samuel I. Fox Bnai Brith Lodge. We'll start by giving you the names of our newly installed officers for 1950: President, Ernest Green; 1st Vice President, Sol Randall,; 2nd Vice President, Stanley Yukon, Financial Secretary and Treasurer, Sanford Goldman; Secretary, David M. Schloss; Guardian, Harold Garvin, Warden, Joe Spatz; Trustees, Kurt Sax, Nathan Raitzas, Max Broody, Philip Shames and Henry Mendell; Grand Lodge Deputy, Irving N. Cohen. The officers were installed at Tifereth Israel Syangogue, Teusday, January 24th, with Eli Levenson, member of the Grand Lodge Executive Committee, as installing officer, assisted by Henry Weinberger, Past Grand President of District 4. Highlights of the Installation Ceremonies started with the presentation of the colors by Scout Troop 99. Irving N. Cohen, outstanding President, was presented an engraved gold watch by the Lodge and a past-president's pin by Mrs. Cohen. Following the Installation there was dancing and refreshments were served...completing a most enjoyable evening for every attending. Last Sunday, Samuel I. Fox members turned out en masse for the San Diego bay City Women's Installation where President Ernest Green presented the Women's President, Mrs. Harold Garvin with an engraved gavel from the Lodge. February 24, 1950—"Tifereth Israel Men's Club," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: On Tuesday, February 7, the Tifereth Israel Men's Club elected the following officers and board members: President, Zel Greenberg; 1st Vice President, Sid Smith; 2nd Vice President, Joe Spatz; Treasruer, Sam Druskin; Financial Secretary, Ben Levenson, and Recording Secretary, Moe Hershey. Program chairman Joe Spatz was able to obtain a very interesting color film of the Tuna Fish Industry which is so important to the welfare of San Diego. The story was told in pictures of the building of tuna ships and of men going out to sea to fish, the skill and hard work, and then the cleaning, steaming, packing of the tuna and other activities that are part of this San Diego industry to get this food product to the shelves for the housewife to buy...

March 28, 1950—1) "Jewish War Veterans, S.D. Post No. 185," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 23: Installation ceremonies for the new officers of the Jewish War Veterans Post No. 185 will be held "April 17th at Temple Beth Israel. Commander Manuel Fisher will hand the reins of Post leadership to Harry Aronoff. Other officers to be installed are Alan Lame, sr. vice commander; David Brooks, jr. vice commander; S. Randall, trustee, and Manuel Fisher, judge advocate. The Post's Auxiliary is also holding its installation the same evening. Mrs. Nixie Kern will hand the gavel to President-Elect Esther Leavitt. Installing officer for the Auxiliary will be Ann Wager. Harry Apelman will do the honors for the Post. Ever capable Joe Spatz is in charge of arrangements for the gala evening...

2) "News of the Fox," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 24: Samuel I. Fox Lodge meeting of March 14th was a lively one with everyone participating in the discussion...Joe Spatz was appointed Ways and Means Chairman with Max Brody as Co-chairman. Past-president Irving Cohen is the United Jewish Fund Chairman for the Lodge. The Athletic Chairman is Maurice Schwartz who will form the Bowling and Baseball Teams...Sick Committee Chairman Joe Gelman told of his visit to Mercy Hospital to see Nathan Raitzas who is recuperating after an operation....The following officers attended the Seminar of the Southern California Council in Los Angeles where instructions and suggestions were given on programming of meetings: Ernest Green, sol Randall, Dave Schloss, Stanley Yukon, Harold Garvin and Joe Spatz... New members are wanted to help make this growing lodge grow faster. Our next meeting will be a social one on Tuesday, March 28th, and Program Chairman Joe Spatz promises an entertaining evening. We would like to see you there.

April 14, 1950—"Jewish War Veterans Post. April 28, 1950—1) "Jewish War Veterans Post 185 Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 9: ...The Post was host to 25 patients from the Naval Hospital, Saturday, April 22 at the Padre baseball game. Bill Starr, Padre President, has generously donated a box and the Post supplies all the refreshments. Every Saturday that the Padres are in San Diego, the patients attend. 2) "Magic Carpet Day, Sunday, April 30th: Be A Worker or Stay at Home Until A Worker Calls on You," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 16: Over 150 "Modern Miracle Workers" are expected to participate in San Diego's "Operation Magic Carpet" this Sunday, April 30th, Morris Douglas, chairman of the day, stated. Gathering for instructions at Beth Israel Center, the workers will breakfast (courtesy of the Jolly Sixteen) at 9:30 a.m., receive their lists and be off to knock on doors on behalf of the "Keep the Miracle Alive" Campaign of the United Jewish Fund. "Magic Carpet Day," said Douglas, "is an effort to dramatically call to the attention of the Jews of San Diego, the needs of the Jews of Europe, Africa and the Moslem countries, as well as Israel, and to have the greatest possible coverage in the history of any campaign. We hope that our Miracle Workers will cover over 1200 prospects on this one day." All organizations have helped in the recruitment of workers. May 12, 1950—John Kluchin, "News of the Fox," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 5: ...Short committee reports were given so that the meeting would be given over to the guest speaker, Sergeant R.B. Lukehart of the San Diego Police Department. His talk was on Juvenile Delinquency. A question and answer period followed which kept Sgt. Lukehart busy. Program Chairman Joe Spatz was congratulated on being able to obtain such an interesting speaker...

July 7, 1950—"Father and Son Fashion Show," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: Members of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue will participate in an evening of frivolity supplied by the Men's Club of the Synagogue. A unique fashion show will be held on Wednesday, July 12 at 8:30 p.m. in the Synagogue at 30th and Howard Srts. Chairman of the evening is Joe Spatz. M. S. Berlin is in charge of refreshments. Fathers who will model with their sons are Ben Gordon, Bernie Rudin, Sam Fischer, Joe Kader, Jack Prager, Julius Levine, Eddie Breitbard, Al Newman, Al Doctor, Eddie Baranov, Sam Druskin, Sam Brenes, Zel Greenberg and Moss Addleson. Comedy will be provided by Isadore Teacher, Moe Hershey and Herman Tulchinsky. MOdels will show clothes loaned by Chenkin's Youth Shop, Bill Solof's, De Sure's Men's Store, Federal Clothiers and Kelly Tailoring Co. The entire congregation of Tifereth Israel Synagogue is welcome. Refreshments will be served following the program.

August 18, 1950—"Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 8: The Jewish War Veterans Auxiliary's first annual Poppy Day, Monday, August 14, raised funds to continue the large hospital program sponsored by the Auxiliary. Tuesday, August 15, a monthly party was held in the tubercular ward of the U.S. Naval Hospital. A pleasant surprise dessert of strudel baked by Sister Rose Tepper topped off the luncheon given the 200 men. Don't forget to bring your family and friends to the Corny Carnival scheduled for August 19 at 6:00 p.m. in Temple Center. An automatic dishwasher will be raffled, refreshments will be served, and games will be played. October 20, 1950—"Boxing Show to Feature Fund Drive for New Center," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 1: A Boxing charity show featuring top names has been billed for the Coliseum Saturday night, November 4th by the Tifereth Israel Synagogue Men's Club to raise funds for building a new Youth Center at 30th and Howard Streets. Baby Ortiz, lightweight champion of Mexico, has been signed by Matchmaker Jack O'Dowd for the main event. O'Dowd is seeking an outstanding Pacific Coast lightie to pit against the classy Oritiz. Ortiz has just returned from a highly successful invasion of Australia during which he decisioned the Aussie champion, Jack Hassen and scored three other wins by knockouts without suffering a loss. In addition to the 10-round main boxing event, there will be a six-round semi-windup and two prelims. Tickets for the show go on sale Monday at DSeSures Men Store, 7th and Broadway; Kelly Tailoring Co., 347 W. Broadway; Federal Clothiers, 220 Broadway and at the Coliseum box office, 15th and E Streets, F-1319. Tickets for the charity fray are scaled at $10 and $5 for ringside. However, fight fans will have an opportunity to buy 2,000 bleacher seats at $1.24. The Youth center plans call for a $150,000 building. Tickets will also be handled by members of the Men's Club committee composed of Zel Greenberg (chairman), Sid Smith, Joe Spatz, Moe J. Hurry The Jewish War Veterans Post No. 185 and Auxiliary have a gala New Years Eve Dinner Dance arranged for your pleasure. Food galore...Favors..Noisemakers..Exchange Hall, 30th at Meade, is the place...Dancing til?...Due to the size of the hall, reservations will be limited to 150. For additional information, call Joe Spatz at Talbot 4739. A Chanukah and Christmas ward party is being planned by Hospital Chairman Jean Spatz and her committee for the patients in the U.S. Naval Hospital tubercular ward. Special holiday goodies (baked by the Auxiliary Sisters), novel games and an appropriate gift for each of the 220 veterans will be some of the highlights of the evening, Tuesday, December 19th. Also, in keeping with the holiday season, Child Welfare Chairman Mollie Ratner has planned a party for the children in Sunshine School. She will bring them home made cookies and ice cream. They, too, will receive gifts. The Auxiliary is holding a Rummage Sale Wednesday, December 20th, and would appreciate your donation of discarded articles, in good condition. March 2, 1951—1) "The Cradle," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 3: "We're the proudest grandparents in San Diego," said Mr. and Mrs. Joe M. Spatz, when asked about their new grandchild. Marsha Kay is the new addition at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Mintz. 7 pound, 4 ounce Marsha was born February 20 at Mercy Hospital. Other proud grandparents and Mr. and Mrs.Wm. Mintz of this city.

2) "Tifereth Israel Synagogue," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: Sabbath Evening Service, March 2nd, 8:15 p.m., Center -- Celebrating Jewish Music Sabbath, a special musical service will be held at Tifereth Israel, Friday, March 2, 8:15 p.m. Under the direction of Cantor Joseph Cysner, both the Sr. and Jr. Choirs will present an elaborate program of liturgical and folk music. Rabbi Levens will comment on the program. An Oneg Shabbat will follow at which Cantor and Mrs. Joseph Cysner will be hosts together with Mr. and Mrs. Joe Spatz and Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Mintz, assisted by an able committee. The Oneg Shabbat will honor the 80th birthday of Mrs. Chaja Cysner and the birth of Marsha K. Mintz....

March 16, 1951— "Tifereth Israel Men's Club Scores Success at Dinner Installation," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 7: The Tifereth Israel Men's Club Dinner Installation, which took place Sunday, March 11th, will be long remembered. A delicious roast beef dinner, cooked and served by members of the Men's Club, brought many words of praise from the guests. Mr. Moe Hershey, chairman of the Installation ceremony, called on Rabbi Levens, Installing Officer, who presented the newly elected Board members for Installation. They were: Isadore Jacobson, Joseph J. Kader, Vernon D. Kahn, Sidney Newman, Joe Spatz, Herman Tulchinsky, Al Young and Harry Zall. The following men were then installed in office: Simon A. Rich, Treasurer; Ben Levenson, Financial Secretary; Harold D. Steckel, Recording Secretary; Dave Solof, Vice President; Moss Addleson, Vice President and Robert S. Cheron, President. Mr. Zel Greenberg, in turning the gavel over to Robert Cheron, summarized the successful activities of the Men's Club during the past year. He pointed out that the membership of the Men's Club had grown by nearly 69 percent. The organization also presented new Torah Covers to the Synagogue, gave financial aid to the Young People's League, provided ushers for Sabbath and Holy Day Services, and presented 22 volumes to boys and girls who were Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Climaxing the achievement of the Men's Club during the past year was a presentation of a check for $2,000 to the New Building Fund, first payment toward the dedication of a room in honor of the Men's Club in the new building. Mrs. Joseph Kader, Cantor Joseph Cysner, Mr. Moe Hershey and Mr. Sam Sklar presented a program of entertainment to round out a perfect evening.

May 25, 1951—"United Synagogue Holds Conference," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: The full program for the Sixth Annual Conference of the United Synagogue of America and the National Women's League, Southern California Region, was being formulated this week following individual and joint planning sessions of the two organizations representing 25 Conservative congregations in Southern California, Arizona and Nevada. More than 500 delegates are expected to attend the conference Sunday, May 27th, at Sinai Congregation, Fourth and New Hampshire in Los Angeles, where an afternoon of seminars and business meetings will precede the evening dinner featuring Dr. Max Routtenberg, executive vice president of the Rabbinical Assembly of America as guest speaker. ...The following will attend as delegates from Tifereth Israel Synagogue of San Diego: M.S. Berlin, Its Penter, Arthur Gardner, Ben Levenson, Joe J. Kader, Bob Cheron, Moss Addleson, I. Jacobson, Irving Goodman and Max Zemen. Alternates: Simon Rich, Harold Steckel, Henry Bowman, Herman Tulchinsky, Sam Brenes, Sam Sklar, Joe Spatz, Sid Newman, Paul Nestor and Marco Ratner.
