Finn, "Palomar College offers course on the Middle East," Palomar
College news release: Beginning Jan. 18, 2006, a Multicultural Studies
course at
Palomar
College
will explore the development of the foremost Middle Eastern religions and
cultures. The course, Middle East: Religion/Culture, will be offered at the
college’s
San Marcos
campus on Wednesdays from 6:30-9:20 p.m. in Room CT-4.
According
to Instructor Yehuda Shabatay, “Students will discuss how Mesopotamia
and
Egypt
became the cradles of Western civilization; the cultural milieu in which
Judaism, Christianity and Islam were born; and the origins of their sacred
books: the Hebrew Bible, the New Testament and the Koran.”
“Not a day passes,” Shabatay said, “without front-page newspaper
headlines, television and radio news reports on current events in the
Middle East
. But in the midst of all the atrocities and the political problems that fill
the mass media, no one reminds us that, once upon a time, that part of the
world was an exemplary one. According to the Bible, the Garden of Eden was in
present day
Iraq
, and all the major monotheistic religions were born in nearby lands.”
Shabatay
said the class will also deal with the invention of writing, with the most
relevant cultural and literary treasures archaeologists discovered in the past
few decades, and with the influence of European cultures on the
Middle East
in the course of many centuries.
Concluding
with an analysis of daily life in various Middle Eastern lands today, the course
will provide information on recent changes in the cities and rural areas; on
marriage and family life; and on the role of religion and ethnicity in the
region. Finally, students will read brief selections from the works of some of
the most outstanding Arabic and Hebrew poets and novelists who lived in the past
century.
A
member of the Multicultural Studies staff since 1990, Shabatay has a teacher’s
diploma, a Master of Jurisprudence degree, and a doctorate in Hebrew literature,
with Bible and history as minors.
