By Albert Hutler, Executive Director, United Jewish Fund
Community Center—Through the work of San Diego's Lasker Lodge of B'nai
B'rith, one more step has been taken toward the possibility of a Jewish
Community Center for San Diego. At the request of the Center Association and the
Lodge the Fund Board voted to appoint a committee to meet with the B'nai B'rith
and Center Committees to determine the feasibility and method of possible
financing of a center plant.
Servicemen—The national Jewish Welfare Board has included a Jewish Welfare Board worker for San Diego Servicemen in their 1951 budget. The local armed service committee is now making plans to take care of servicemen's activities until such time as the Jewish Welfare Board sees fit to set up an installation. Several sailors have been to the office trying to find some Jewish activity in San Diego, but with the dearth of activity for our own young adult group, how can the servicemen expect to find anything? The Armed Service Committee is going to correct that by December 1st.
Displaced Persons—San Diego's two new families are already self sufficient, thanks to jobs for them supplied by Ed Bland and Lou Moorsteen. The Emigre Committee still needs jobs and housing. Council women need supplies for their Thrift Shop which helps to support the local emigre program. To date $8600 of Reserve funds have been used for this project. Campaign money has not been used in 1950.
Free Loan Fund—Morris Niederman chairs the committee which has in the last two months helped to establish three local people in small business. Maximum loan is $200.
