July 1949—
"Jolly Sixteen," Southwestern Jewish Press, pages 1, 2: Thirty five years ago {1914}, a group of 16 energetic women gathered in a private home, and organized the Jolly 16. Their main object for organizing was to render assistance toward every worthy cause. It would take pages and pages to enumerate all of the good deeds that have been accomplished by this small group. They have never turned down any request for assistance either materially or financially, and although the membership has changed a great deal during this long span of years, more than half of our members have been part of this group for over 20 years. Three of our charter members are living in Los Angeles. They are Mrs. Miriam Rubin, Mrs. Tillie Rittoff and Mrs. Helen Selditz.  This group has always worked with our own Jewish Welfare organization and supplemented the necessities which were not allowed our families by the Community Chest.  We have furnished layettes and trousseaus where needed. For many years after War I, we supported a German War Orphan until she was grow. We have also had a scholarship fund, and used it upon a special occasion for a young man who was brought to our attention by the principal of the San Diego High School. We also furnished transportation and lunches to handicapped children at various times.  We have furnished extra supplies for Passover and the High Holidays to families in need. We have supplied extra nursing care in cases where special nurses were required, and htere3 was no one else to furnish them.  We have sent annual donations to Rest Haven, Crippled Children's Home, Red Cross, Cancer Fund, Visiting Nurses and to the various Tuberculosis institutions. We were the original sponsors of our own San Diego Hebrew Home for the Aged and most of our members are among the original $500,00 donors. It was the contributions of the first 50 donors, which enabled the purchase of the Home. Our present officers are: Mrs. Al Neumann, President; Mrs. Sol Chenkin, Vice Pres.; Mrs. Harry Klaskin, Secy; Mrs. Carl Esenoff, Treasurer; Mrs. Paul Nestor, Corres. Secy; Mrs. Robert Gordon, Social Secy. Our other members are Mrs. Milo Berenson, Mrs. Morris Breitbard, Mrs. Ted Brenner, MRs. Lester Cooper, Mrs. Mary Kantor, Mrs. George Neumann, Mrs. H. Lipinsky, Mrs. Harris Rubel, Mrs. Lou Steinman, Mrs. Arthur Glickman, and Mrs. Paul Nestor.

October 1949—"Jolly 16 Celebrates 35 Years of Service," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6: Rose Neumann, president of the Jolly Sixteen, is proud to announce that on November 6th, the organization will celebrate their 35th anniversary with a banquet and dance at the El Cortez Hotel.  Mary Kantor and Rose Gordon are co-chairman in charge of the evening's activities and have planned many surprises. Ida Nasatir, known and beloved by the community, will act as Historian and Toastmistress for the celebration. Each lady present will receive a beautiful gift as a memento of the occasion.  The Jolly Sixteen was formed in 1914, with the sole purpose of lending a helping hand where needed. It has never deviated from this path and thirty-five years of organized activity has only whetted the will of this group to rise to the needs of the Community. Their achievements are many and their activities include assistance to scholars, support of orphans, active participation in organizations such as the United Jewish Fund, Red Cross, Community Chest, U.S.O., Braille Club, Hebrew Home for the Aged, Jewish Welfare Society, Infantile Paralysis, Cancer Fund, Visting Nurses and other worthy organizations.  Jolly Sixteen is comprised of Rose Neumann, Preident; Eva Chenkin, Vkice President; Julia Klaskin, Secretary; Bernice Esenoff, Treasurer; Frieda Nestor, Social Secretary. Other Jolly Sixteeners include Lucille Rubel, Sadie Berenson, Bess Breitbard, Ida Lipinsky, Mary Kantor, Rose Gordon, Julia Steinman, Julia Neeumann, Glicka Brenner, Rose Glickman, Sylvia Cooper and Julia Kaufman. 2) "35th Anniversary Observed by Jolly 16," Southwestern Jewish Press, page 6:  Autumn colors and candlelight set the mood for the Jolly Sixteen 35th Anniversary Dinner Dance held at the El Cortez Hotel on Sunday evening, Nov. 6th.  One hundred and ninety-five people entered the Don Room to dine on sumptuous fare and dance to the music of Jay Eslick. Beautifully gowned women and their handsome escorts were greeted by members of the Jolly Sixteen. Each woman received a lovely gift. Tables were set banquet style and beautifully decorated by Hancock Florists in Autumn  colored Chrysanthemums, Silver candelabra with lighted tapers, graced the tables as diner was served by candlelight.  Rabbi Morton Cohn of Temple Beth Israel gave the invocation. Ida Nasatir was toastmistress and in her own inimitable style gave the history of the Jolly Sixteen. An impressive candlelighting ceremony was enacted by Bess Breitbard, Julia Neumann, Freda Nestor, Ida Lipinsky and Rose Neumann. Each represented 20 to30 years of individual service to the Jolly Sixteen.  Highlight of the evening was the presentation of a check for $1500 to the Hebrew Home for the aged. This sum represented the proceeds from the sale of Jolly Sixteen cook Books, consisting of recipes received from women in the community and compiled and edited by Mary Kantor, as a means for the Jolly Sixteen to raise funds for the Hebrew Home. Sam Addleson, Pres. of the Hebrew Home, accepted the gift on behalf of all guests and members of that organization. Rabbi Monroe Levens of Tifereth Israel Synagogue gave the closing prayer. Mr. and Mrs. Blakey, and group, gave an exhibition of square dancing. Rose Neumann President, Mary Kantor, Rose Gordon, Co-Chairmen and members of the Jolly Sixteen express their gratitude to all who made this 35th Anniversary Dinner Dance a success through their efforts and patronage.
