Irving Salomon
1897-1979
Honored by: Robert Lerner
An industrialist, diplomat, philanthropist and rancher in Valley Center,
Col. Irving Salomon served the United Nations over many years in many roles,
including an appointment as a member of the U.S. Delegation to the General
Assembly.
It was in the latter capacity that Ambassador Salomon and Mrs. Cecile
Salomon hosted U.N. dignitaries, motion picture celebrities and world
leaders. Among this group was Eleanor Roosevelt, Golda Meir, and Dwight
Eisenhower.
In 1972, he was honored by Pope Paul VI for distinguished and notable
achievements. It marked the first time that a Pope had conferred
Knighthood on a layman of the Jewish faith.
In Valley Center, Col. Salomon bred prize-winning Herefords,
Hampshires and quarter horses on his historic 2,000-acre ranch. Until
his death, he traveled worldwide as a United Nations representative and as a
U.S. State Department emissary on missions to Moscow, Asia and Africa.
