As retold by
Bruce Lowitt
Isaac lives in New Orleans. When Hurricane Katrina hits, he stands in
his doorway, watching the water rushing by.
Soon a man in a rowboat comes by and invites Isaac to get in with him and head
to safety.
"No, but thank you," Isaac says. "God will take care of me."
The rowboat floats away.
The water rises and Isaac climbs to the second floor. Another boat comes by and
again the man offers to take Isaac out of harm's way.
Isaac says, "That's very generous of you, but God will care for me."
And the man and the boat float down the street.
The water continues to rise and Isaac is forced to climb onto the roof of his
house.
The pilot of a Coast Guard helicopter sees him and lowers a ladder.
"That's okay," Isaac says.
"Are you sure?" the pilot asks.
"Yes, I'm sure. God will take care of me."
The water rises over the rood and Isaac is swept away and drowns.
In Heaven, he asks the angel at the gate, "Why did God not take care of me!
What happened?"
"He sent you two boats and a helicopter," the angel says. "What
else did you want?"
