As retold by
Bruce Lowitt
Jacob, in his 90s, has been slipping in and out of a coma for months. Zelda,
his wife of 63 years, has sat by his bedside every day.
One night, Jacob regains consciousness and beckons for Zelda to lean towards
him.
"Zelda, darling, you have been with me through all the bad times."
"I know, Jacob, sweetheart."
"When my businesses failed, you were there. When I got hit by that car, you
were by my side. When we lost the house, you gave me support. When my health
started failing, you were still by my side. You know what, Sadie?"
"What dear?"
"I think you're bad luck."
