As retold by
Bruce Lowitt
Bertha and her 8-year-old granddaughter Becky are
walking along the beach when a huge wave engulfs the girl and sweeps her out to
sea.
Bertha begins shrieking toward heaven, "Oy, God, this is my only
granddaughter! She is the love of my life. Please, God, bring her back to me,
and I'll go to the synagogue every day for the rest of my life!"
Suddenly, another wave sweeps onto the beach and deposits Becky back on the
sand.
Bertha hugs and kisses Becky, then studies her, looks to heaven and says, "There was a hat."
