As retold by
Bruce Lowitt
"Oh, mom, I just don't know what to do," the young woman is wailing on
the phone.
"What's wrong sweetheart?"
"The kids are getting to be too much, there's not enough to make a decent
dinner for the three of us and the car won't start."
"There, there, sweetheart. I'll come over and make dinner. No, I'll make a
few so you and the children will be fine."
And the young woman says, "Oh, mom, that'll be great. I don't know what I'd
do without you."
"It's nothing, sweetheart. It's what mothers do. So tell me, when's Ralph
getting home from his latest business trip?"
"Ralph? Who's Ralph?" the young woman says.
"Ralph. Your husband."
"Mom, my husband's name is . Wait a minute. Is this 633-0947?
"No, it's not. dear. You have the wrong number."
And the young woman says, "Does this mean you're not coming over to make dinner?"
