Which Palestinians are ready to make peace with Israel?

HERZLIYA, Israel--What is the most important theme of Israeli politics, policy, and thinking today? It is pretty simple but you will rarely see it explained in much of the world:  Most Israelis believe that the Palestinians don't want to make a  comprehensive peace with Israel in exchange for a Palestinian state. Hamas  doesn’t  want it; the Palestinian Authority (PA) is both unwilling and  unable to do it. Israel faces a hostile Iran, Syria, Hamas, and Hizballah, and various Islamist movements which all want to destroy it. In addition, it cannot depend on strong Western or international support in defending  itself.
 
Therefore, it is not a moment for Israel to make big concessions or take  big risks. Peace is not at hand. The priority—even while continuing negotiations and trying to help the PA to survive—is defense.
 That’s what the people who voted for Labor or Likud or Lieberman, Kadima or Shas or National Union or Jewish Home or United Torah Judaism believed.

 More than 85 percent of Israelis voted for parties that hold that basic conception, while that concept itself is the product of a very serious  assessment of very real experience. And that—whatever differences they have—is beyond any definition of “left” or “right.”

 In contrast, what is the main theme internationally in evaluating the  elections? The right in Israel is against peace, Israelis moved to the right in this election hence Israelis are against peace.  To make such a leap, it is necessary to avoid  talking about the herd of elephants in the room: Palestinian politics. If anyone looked beyond the most superficial level of English-language interviews by PA leaders trying to make propaganda points, the conclusion is unavoidable that there is no possibility of an Israel-Palestinian peace agreement for years to come. This is regardless of who is  Israel’s leader or anything within reason, or even somewhat beyond reason, which could be offered.
 
 Here are some tips toward proving that point:

—Analyze the Fatah Central Committee's membership and the viewpoints  expressed by the group’s top leaders. The number who can be called moderates ready to accept and implement a two-state solution stands at  about 10 percent of them.

 —Mahmoud Abbas is weak. He has neither charisma nor organized base. While relatively moderate he will not give up the demand for all Palestinian refugees to be able to live in Israel, something that is acceptable to no  potential governing party in Israel. He is sick and will probably not last  in office much longer. He has made no attempt to transform Palestinian political thinking or to provide an alternative vision of peace for his people.

 —There is no moderate alternative Palestinian leader in Fatah or  elsewhere. Are there those who voice a moderate two-state solution  position and who advocate coexistence? Yes, there are some but they have  no organization or power whatsoever. Moreover, they say so almost exclusively in English to Westerners and not to their own people. To express anything equivalent to Labor or Kadima, even Likud, positions is to risk your life.

 —Schools, mosques, media and other institutions controlled fully or partly by the PA daily preach that all Israel is Palestine, Israel is evil, and violence against it is good. Hardly the most minimal steps have  been taken to prepare the Palestinian masses for peace. For example, no one dare suggest that a Palestinian nationalist movement might want to resettle Palestinian refugees in Palestine, not Israel; or that Israel and President Bill Clinton made a good offer in 2000 and it was a mistake to  reject it. Or a dozen other points necessary as a basis for real peace.

 —Palestinian public opinion polls consistently show overwhelming support for hardline positions and for terrorism against Israeli civilians.

 —An unyielding historical narrative still predominates that the whole land between the Jordan River and the sea is and should be Arab Palestine.

—Of course, Hamas governs about 40 percent of West Bank/Gaza Palestinians and opposes Israel’s existence explicitly. The PA and Fatah do not vigorously combat the Hamas world view, except perhaps for its idea of an Islamist state.

 —On the contrary, Fatah and the PA put a higher priority on conciliation with Hamas rather than peace with Israel.
 
—This conflict is not continuing because there is a dispute about the precise boundary line between Israel and a Palestinian state. It is going on because the Palestinian leaders—"all of them—are either unwilling or unable to accept Israel’s permanent existence, the end of the conflict, the abandonment of terrorism, and the settlement of Palestinian refugees  in a Palestinian state.
 
 --What should have been happening recently was the PA sending delegations around the world to announce it was the sole legitimate government of the Gaza Strip, that Hamas seized power in a coup and murdered Fatah people in cold blood, that Hamas is an extremist terrorist group, and that the PA demands the international community restore its own rule to the area.

 Instead, it sent delegations around the world to blame Israel for every  problem and tried to negotiate a deal with Hamas without requiring any change in that organization’s policy or goals.

None of the above arguments can be refuted. Literally none of these points—except for the barrier posed by Hamas’s rule over Gaza—is  really understood by most governments, academics, or journalists.
 
Nevertheless, if you add all these factors together it is  clear that  whoever governs Israel, the PA is incapable of making comprehensive peace. There is no peace process but rather a long-term peace recess.

 There’s nothing left-wing or right- wing about the above analysis. Tsipi Livni and Ehud Barak know these things. Equally, this analysis doesn’t mean  Israel cannot work with the PA on such matters as stability, economic well-being for Palestinians, blocking terrorism, or keeping Hamas out of power on the West Bank.
 
There is a Palestinian partner for the above four issues, but not for a comprehensive solution ending the conflict forever in exchange for a Palestinian state living in peace alongside Israel. As we learned in the  1990s with the peace process and more recently with disengagement, Israel’s actions, no matter how conciliatory and concessionary, cannot make peace when the other side is unwilling and unable to do so. It’s  time for the rest of the world to learn this fact.

On Clinton's San Diego visit on Presidents Weekend

SAN DIEGO—I have been fascinated by U.S. Presidents ever since I was a little boy, and realized that our family name—Harrison—was the same as that of two Presidents, William Henry Harrison and his grandson,  Benjamin Harrison.

Initially, it was with some disappointment that I learned as a child that we were in no way or fashion related to those former Presidents, that our family name had been changed in 1909 from Harowitz to Harrison at the behest of my grandfather, Meyer, who thought as a newly-minted architect, he’d do better if the name on the door said M. Joseph Harrison instead of Meyer J. Harowitz.   His father, Velvel, went along with it—and became known as William Harrison. 

Harawitz and Harrison, I was told, were similar names as the ending “witz” in Slavic languages means the same as the ending “son” in English.

Later on, when I began giving serious study to American history, I realized my family would have been more fortunate to originally have been named “Jefferwitz,” “Madiwitz” or “Jackwitz”  because Jefferson, Madison, and Jackson were Presidents one could be proud of.  The Harrisons were hardly distinguished in the nation’s top office.

William Henry Harrison gave the longest inaugural speech on record, in freezing weather, and died one month after taking office.  As a result John Tyler became president—the first vice president to succeed to the presidency.  William Henry Harrison also started the so-called 20-year curse, in which presidents elected in 1840 (him), 1860 (Abraham Lincoln), 1880 (James Garfield); 1900 (William McKinley); 1920 (Warren Harding), 1940 (Franklin D. Roosevelt) and 1960 (John F. Kennedy) all died in office, either of natural causes or by violence.   The “curse” was broken by the president elected in 1980 (Ronald Reagan), after he survived an assassination attempt.  The president elected in 2000 (George W. Bush) filled out his eight-year term without serious illness.

Benjamin Harrison was another oddity, being the only president whose administration was sandwiched between the first and second terms of another president, Grover Cleveland.  People initially thought they liked Harrison better than Cleveland, but after getting a good look at Harrison they decided not to reelect him but instead to bring back Cleveland.  Thus Cleveland is recorded as America’s 22nd and 24th president, having the effect of messing up our presidential count.   How many people realize that while Barack Obama is the 44th President of the United States, he is only the 43rd person to occupy that high office?

Given my interest in U.S. Presidents, I was pleased to have the opportunity to cover former U.S. President Bill Clinton when he addressed the International Franchise Association at the Manchester Grand Hyatt on Sunday—the middle of “Presidents Weekend” in which America marks the birthdays of both Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (Feb. 22).

Outside the hotel was a large gathering of protestors from labor unions and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community, protesting Clinton’s failure to cancel his speech in observance of a boycott against the hotel.  Its owner, Doug Manchester supports Roman Catholic causes. He is, for example, a  prominent supporter of the University of San Diego. He also helped to bankroll the campaign for Proposition 8 which voters adopted last November.  The measure prohibited same-sex marriages in California.  That ballot proposition is now under review in state courts.   Same sex marriage advocates have urged people who believe in equal rights to boycott Manchester’s hotel.

Personally, I believe that people whatever their sexual orientation should have the right to marry whomever they want.  San Diego Jewish World urged a “no” vote on Proposition 8, and our publication will continue to take positions in support of equal rights in the future.

Nevertheless, I felt that the protestors had put Clinton into an untenable position.  If he were to cancel his appearance, he would have broken a valid contract—a gesture for which he, not the protesters, could have been sued for breach of contract.   I’m not sure when Clinton signed the contract to address the IFA, but I assume it was prior to the time that the boycott was organized.  As for the IFA, its spokesmen said it was approximately six years ago that the association made the arrangement for the convention to be held at the Hyatt.  Approximately 2,300 persons attended the convention, and of these, about 1,700, went to the luncheon at which Clinton spoke.

The money that Clinton earns for his speeches is used to support the works of his Global Initiative and the Clinton Foundation, both of which are concerned with improving the health of some of the poorest people in the world.  So if Clinton were to have chosen to cancel his appearance, he also would have chosen to reduce the amount of money he raises for worldwide health care.  CNN has reported that Clinton’s fee per speech is in the neighborhood of $150,000.

Most of Clinton’s speech on Sunday dealt with the world economic situation, as was reported in yesterday’s edition of San Diego Jewish World.  Personally fascinating to me were some of the things that Clinton had to say on President’s Weekend about other U.S. Presidents.

For example, at one point he essayed times in American history when people underestimated their leadership:

“Before the Constitution was ratified, George Washington was fighting with soldiers with no shoes; they were freezing themselves to death. Every body said he was a failed general and we were on borrowed time  ….  In the Civil War, they said {Ulysses S.} Grant was a drunk and no good.  There’s not a single example, by the way, of him ever being drunk on the job.  But it got into the atmosphere, you know, and a story line is important so people will hold onto it for sometimes 100 years.  He revolutionized amateur warfare for the first time since Napoleon.  Even though he got no credit for it, the proof is in the pudding.  And, you know, people called {Franklin D.} Roosevelt every name in the book.  But every time someone bets against America, they lose money over the long run. We’re coming back.”

Steven Greenbaum, the outgoing chairman of the International Franchise Association, asked Clinton to identify his most satisfying moments since leaving the presidency.   Clinton responded that he was proud of the work he had been doing to combat AIDS and malaria in developing countries, and then added: “I also loved working with former President Bush on the tsunami program and the Katrina program.  It gives the American people the sense that no matter what their party, neither of us have horns and they can get along with people they disagree with.  And I think that is very important.”

He referred to joint morale-raising missions on which he and his predecessor George H. W. Bush went at the request of his successor, George W. Bush, to bring aid and encouragement to the victims of the tsunami in Asia and of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans and along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

About the current president, Barack Obama, who  in 2008 defeated Clinton’s wife in the contest for the Democratic presidential election and who later named her as Secretary of State, Clinton said:

“One of the reasons that President Obama won the election quite apart from the distressed condition of the economy and the controversy over our continued involvement in Iraq is that America is a different country. We are no longer a biracial country, we are a multi racial, multi religious, multi ethnic country that is an amazing conglomeration."

Maybe this story should not have been 'screened'

TAIPEI, TAIWAN — What you are doing now is not reading, but "screening." Yes, you are at this very moment screening the textprinted digitally on this computer screen. You are not reading text on a paper surface; you are "screening" this article through the lens of the computer screen in front of you. A new word is born -- screening!

When a top computer industry writer at the New York Times was told about this new term, he responded in a one-word email note:"Hmmmmmmm."

Screening? Can anyone just coin a new word and make it stick? No, but new words are coined every day, and some stick and some don't. Time will tell whether or not "screening" (to mean "reading information on a computer screen, as distinct from reading a print newspaper or
magazine or book") will stay with us or not. For now, the word has been accepted and listed by the editors at urbandictionary.com.

Screening is defined as: "To read text on a computer screen, cellphonescreen, Kindle screen or PDA screen or BlackBerry screen; replaces the term "reading" which now only refers to reading print text on paper."

Example: "I hate reading print newspapers now. I do all my screening online."

The word is so new, not everyone has seen it yet. And many do not agree with its coinage.

Amit Gilboa, an Israeli writer living in Singapore, declared: "No, it's still reading. Whether in a book, a print newspaper, chalkboard, whiteboard, it's still reading words made up of letters. Screening is still reading."

However, Hidetoshi Abe in Tokyo, Japan, told this reporter he likes the new term and agrees it fits our new Internet age. "I think 'screening' makes perfect sense to represent the way we now take in information via computer screens. It's a whole new ballgame."

Reading, of course, is a complex cognitive process of decoding symbols printed on a paper surface for the purpose of deriving meaning (reading comprehension) and/or constructing meaning, according to scholars. Written information on a printed page is received by the retina, processed by the primary visual cortex, and interpreted in Wernicke's area.

But when we "read" online (or "screen", in the new coinage), the digitalized information is processed in a different way. Reading online is not the same thing as reading on a paper surface in a book or magazine or newspaper.

You have just "screened" your very first article online using this new term. You are now an Internet screener. Congratulations, and welcome
to this amazing new world.

SAN DIEGO—The Kiddush prayer is chanted over wine, before the evening and morning meals on Sabbaths and festivals. We thank God for creating the fruit of the vine. The Kiddush is a reminder that the creation of this universe and Israel’s Deliverance from Egypt is the work of a Divine Power.  Although the blessing over wine is primarily a home ceremony, it is included in the Friday evening synagogue service as well. The Kiddush has been set to many new melodies, some for common usage and others to be performed in concert.  

In the 1940’s, Kurt Weill was commissioned to write his version of the Kiddush. He was the son of a cantor and born in Dessau, Germany in 1900. At the age of eleven he began composing music, and at the age of 21 served as synagogue organist and choir director.  

He composed several operas early in his career, but eventually was attracted to theater music, and used American jazz forms, Tangos and the style of music-hall ballads in his compositions.  In 1928, he wrote the Three Penny Opera, as a portrait of a period in German history, which was later revived in New York in 1955 and ran for more than five years on Broadway. 

When Hitler came to power in 1933, Weill and his wife, the actress-singer, Lotte Lenya, left Germany and moved to Paris and then to the United States, where he wrote several well known Broadway musicals: among the most popular were Knickerbocker Holiday, and Lady in the Dark. In 1935, he wrote the score for a massive pageant about Jewish peoplehood, The Eternal Road which was performed in New York City.

Kurt Weill’s Kiddush is certainly different from usual synagogue music, but beautiful in its harmonization, rhythms and spirit.  It is a wonderful “show piece” for any special evening of Jewish music and sets the words of the Kiddush in an entirely new light!  

KIDDUSH:  “Blessed is the Lord our God, ruler of the universe, creator of the fruit of the vine. Blessed is the Lord our God, Ruler of the universe, who hallows us with His Mitzvot and takes delight in us.  In His love and favor, He has made His holy Sabbath our heritage, as a reminder of the work of creation. It is first among our sacred days, and a remembrance of the Exodus from Egypt.  O God, You have chosen us and set us apart from all the peoples, and in love and favor have given us the Sabbath day as a sacred inheritance. Blessed is the Lord, for the Sabbath and its holiness.”

This recording of Kurt Weill’s Kiddush was made in Toronto with the choir of Holy Blossom Temple under the direction Cantor Benjamin Maissner.

Play questions ethics of combat journalists

LOS ANGELES— Donald Margulies is one of my favorite living playwrights. He creates characters that are real, plots that are provocative, and dialogue that is lucid and often hilarious. His latest play, Time Stands Still, which was commissioned by the Geffen Playhouse and premiered there on February 11, is a commendable addition to his body of work.

The play deals with a celebrated photojournalist who has been chasing wars around the world until it has become her obsession. Sarah, as depicted by the luminous Anna Gunn, is first seen returning home to her apartment in Brooklyn from a battleground where she was nearly killed. With her is her lover, James (David Harbour), a journalist who often accompanies her on these treacherous assignments. At this point, they are both broken: she in body and he in spirit.

As they reflect on the hopelessness and futility of their profession---they do nothing to help, they merely record---they reprise a theme that British playwright Chris Thorpe introduced a few years back in his play Safety. In that play a combat photographer, filled with despair and disquietude, ruminates on how he lost his humanity in his quest for the perfect depiction of the horrors of war.

Sarah’s quest is more of an addiction. She is revitalized by the adrenaline rush of being in the thick of things, dodging bullets and tempting death. James, however, is ready to pack it in. They have been together for eight years and he feels that it’s time to marry and settle down to what he considers a “normal” life.

Their intense, ongoing discussion is interrupted, and enlivened, by Richard (Robin Thomas), the photo editor for the magazine that Sarah works for, and his bubbleheaded new girlfriend Mandy (played deliciously by Alicia Silverstone). Mandy is very young, naïve, and intellectually innocent, much to Sarah’s annoyance. Richard, however, is obviously smitten with her, in spite of his recognition that his friends are astonished that he has chosen such a seemingly vacuous playmate.

Sarah becomes even more annoyed when Mandy questions her (Sarah’s) non-participatory role in the devastation that she records. “How can you stand there shooting pictures and not help when someone is dying right in front of you?” she asks. To which Sarah indignantly responds that it is not her job to help, but to document. She relishes the thought that she makes “time stand still” when she captures and freezes the moment.

Tony Award winner Daniel Sullivan, who has worked with Margulies on four productions, directs this play with a deft touch, moving it along briskly and keeping it from becoming too heavy. And, of course, Margulies’ unique perspective and wit invest the proceedings with laugh-out-loud humor. But as in his Pulitzer Prize-winning play of 2000, Dinner with Friends, Margulies opens another can of worms as the play comes to an ambiguous end. “I just ask the questions,” Margulies has said. “I don’t supply the answers.”

Providing the ambience of Sarah and James’ small loft apartment is scenic designer John Lee Beatty. The appropriate nondescript costumes for the three “grownups” and a series of frivolous outfits for the cutesy Mandy were designed by Rita Ryack.

Time Stands Still was the recipient of a New American Play Award in 2007 from the Edgerton Foundation. As Dr. Brad Edgerton noted at that time, when the play was still a “work in progress,”: “We have great expectations that the play will be emotionally moving and teach us more about the human condition---and that is the ultimate purpose of great drama.” Happily, Donald Margulies has met those expectations.

Time Stands Still will continue at the Geffen Playhouse, 10886 LeConte Avenue, in the Westwood area of Los Angeles; Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7:30, Fridays at 8, Saturdays at 4 and 8:30, and Sundays at 2 and 7 through March 15th. Call (310) 208-5454 for tickets.

The San Diego Chapter of National Council of Jewish Women will welcome new members today, Friday, Sept. 5, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at a garden party tea in the home of Mrs. Leo Greenbaum, 4290 Altamarino Way.  Guests will be entertained with a clever skit entitled “Information Please Council” in which the officers of our organization will participate.

Plans have been completed or entertaining service personnel during the High Holy Days.  All of the synagogues have extended an invitation to servicemen and their families to be their guests for Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur services.

Home hospitality will be arranged through a special Sisterhood committee composed of Mrs. Jerome Greben, Mrs. Sidney Newman, and Mrs. Bernard Godes. A Break the Fast Supper will be given at the Temple center Monday, September 29 at 6:30 p.m. with the three Sisterhoods cooperating.  Mrs. Jennie Drogin will be chairman of the serving committee.

Anyone wishing to offer home hospitality during the holidays is asked to contact any member of the Sisterhood committee or the J.W. B. office at F. 9-3712.

San Diego B’nai B’rith delegates came home with honors for their community.  At the District Convention held in Seattle, August 23-27, the Men’s Grand Lodge re-elected to the executive Board Eddie Breitbard of the San Diego Lasker Lodge. The Women’s Grand Lodge re-elected Mrs. Harold Garvin of Bay City Chapter and elected Mrs. Jeremiah Aronoff of Birdie Stodel Chapter to the Executive Board.  Morrie Kraus was appointed to handle all publicity throughout the convention. San Diegans may well be proud of th 14 men and women who represented them at this convention of over 700 delegates from the 8 western states and British Columbia.  Congratulations to all of you!

The annual Yom Kippur Nite Charity Dance sponsored by the Yo-Ma-Co Club will be held Monday, Sept. 29  in the don room of the El Cortez Hotel.  Merle Carlson’s orchestra and the Hollywood Starlets will furnish the music and entertainment for the evening.  The tickets are $1.50 and all proceeds go to charity.

Byron Sharpe, ticket chairman, R-8129, or any Yo-Ma-Co member will welcome the opportunity to further the cause of charity and bring to you an evening of enjoyment.  All those attending previous Yo-Ma-Co dances know what a memorable evening it can be.
