Israel Did NOT Hit UNRWA School In Gaza

WASHINGTON, D.C. —That needs to be the headline somewhere, and we were sure it wouldn't be in the New York Times or The Washington Post. The story itself bears scrutiny; not least because the International Criminal Court is trying to figure out how to make "Palestine" a "country" to give it status to sue Israel for war crimes (more on that later).

The first thing we know is that Israel's operation in Gaza was a response to continuing Hamas fire directed at Israeli civilians - a Palestinian war crime. During the operation, an Israeli bomb hit a street near an UNRWA school and a large number of people were killed. We also know that Hamas put its explosives, mortars and rocket launchers amid the civilian population, inside mosques and under civilian buildings. To understand the ubiquity of this second Palestinian war crime (there are others), go to The Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center and find the report, "Using the Civilian Population of the Gaza Strip as Human Shields: Aerial photographs show the location of terrorist bases and weapons in the heart of the Gaza Strip."

Enlarge the pictures until you can really see the tentacles they wrapped around the people, making them human shields (yet another war crime).

Palestinians are no longer reticent to explain. One man told The Washington Post his family lived next door to a soccer field from which Hamas fired at Israel, but he thought the Israelis wouldn't hit his building. "They can tell the difference between a rocket launcher and an apartment." His confidence is touching, if naive. John Ging, UNRWA's operations director in Gaza, is not naïve; he is complicit. He knows Israel didn't hit the school, but he makes it Israel's fault.

"I never said anyone was killed in the school. Our officials never made any such allegation. (This is patently untrue; an official UN report three days after the attack said, "Israeli shelling directly hit two UNRWA schools.") I know no one was killed in the school," Ging told The Jerusalem Post. "But 41 innocent people were killed in the street outside the school. Many of those people had taken refuge in the school and wandered out onto the street. The State of Israel still has to answer for that. What did they know and what care did they take?"

What did Israel know? Is Ging suggesting that Israel deliberately dropped a bomb on a street full of civilians? Israel warned Palestinians in Arabic before they attacked, urged them to take shelter or leave the area. Oh, right, they DID take shelter - in the school - according to Ging. The school Israel DIDN'T hit. Question for Ging: why were they "wandering" on the street and how does he know they were "innocent"? Maybe they weren't and maybe they weren't civilians, either. See the outstanding report by Steven Stotsky for CAMERA, analyzing casualty figures from Palestinian sources to conclude that males, aged 15-40 (prime combatant age for Hamas, but violating the Geneva Convention on Child Soldiers), were heavily overrepresented on casualty lists.

What care did Israel take? Israel didn't hit the school.

But that won't help when politically motivated prosecutors at the political International Criminal Court get ready to strike.

Israel electorate has moved to the right

JERUSALEM—The campaign for the election of February 10 is far enough along to risk some commentary.

Benyamin Netanyahu's Likud is holding a lead with a projected 28-30 seats in the Knesset; Tzipi Livni's Kadima cannot seem to rise above 21-24 seats; and Ehud Barak's Labor is stuck in the range of 15-17 seats.

There are 120 seats in the Knesset. Kadima currently has 29 seats, Likud 12 seats, and Labor 18.

Reinforcing the polls were phone-in responses to the three leading candidates' appearance on television. Netanyahu came in first, Livni second, and Barak third. A query on a popular web site found 73 percent of 44,000 respondents indicating that they would not vote for Livni.

Along with Likud, the high flyer is Avigdor Lieberman's Israel our Home. It has 11 seats in the present Knesset, and is showing as many as 18 in the polls. Lieberman may be taking votes from Netanyahu.

The electorate has moved to the right. Persistent rocket and mortar attacks on southern towns and the Gaza operation have done their work. Israelis are thinking about national defense, and the leading parties emphasize the subject.

Netanyahu refuses to divide Jerusalem, and promises that he will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon. Lieberman has sought to outlaw one of the Arab parties; he says that Arabs who do not demonstrate their loyalty to Israel should lose their citizenship; and has proposed transferring to Palestine areas of Israel with large Arab populations.

The Obama presidency may be making its contribution to the shift rightward. Israel was a lone outpost of support for George W. Bush, and is expecting a change in the messages coming from Washington. The media chart the appointments the new president has made in fields that concern Israel. Some Israelis may be reading the commentary from "well placed" Americans--often Jews--who are urging the administration to get tough with a country that has come to rely on unquestioned American support, and has not bothered to offer the Palestinians anything worthwhile. (See, for example, this article from Newsweek.

The media has not been kind to either Netanyahu or Lieberman. It labels Netanyahu as unreliable, and Lieberman as beyond the pale. We have seen comparisons of Netanyahu's statements of past years with what he claims he said, as well as his earlier predictions and promises that never came to pass.

Among the questions raised concerning his previous term as prime minister are, Did he, or didn't he send an emissary to Damascus to promise that Israel would withdraw completely from the Golan? And what prompted him to concede large sections of Hebron to Palestinian control?

The whopper in his career is the claim that he was offered the finance ministry of Italy due to his success in reforming the Israeli economy. We are also hearing that he authored a book, which is printed, but will not be released until after the election. Speculation is that the book describes his actions in cutting welfare payments, which might get in the way of what he is now promising one of his potential coalition partners.

There are positive and negative sides to Netanyahu's reputation. The obvious negative is that voters cannot have the foggiest idea what they will get from Prime Minister Netanyahu, other than inspiring declarations of what he will do and what he has done. The positive side is that he is unlikely to be as destructive to a good relationship with America or Europe as his campaign suggests.

His rhetorical record is disturbing, but he has waffled under pressure in the direction of pragmatism. He will disappoint his most enthusiastic supporters, but provide them with fine sounding claims of steadfast consistency.

Israel's election, and the American election will provide yet additional opportunities to examine the "great leader" conception of history. Expectations of Obama are unsurpassed. Netanyahu may not be in his league, but he is as close as any Israeli.

Both of them will face profound challenges to what they have promised. Obama's come from the economic crisis, as well as from the perennial problems of the world's leader fixing all those problems in its far flung responsibilities. When the problems are interconnected, the chances of scoring high on any one of them is especially problematic. Israel is in a complex of issues for the United States that also includes Iraq, Afghanistan, the West Bank, Gaza, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia and oil. Each of those places, as well as Israel,has its own politics, and each is likely to resist any effort of the United States (or anyone else) to dictate an optimal solution. Palestine has vaporized into the contending West Bank and Gaza, and has made this corner of America's constituency even more troubling. It is not the time for outsiders to deal with Palestinians when they are talking nasty to one another, and occasionally killing one another.

Netanyahu has some credits on his record. He led a reform of Israeli social programs which reduced welfare payments below the level where they were threatening economic viability. Despite his claims, however, he did not produce all by himself the years of prosperity.

Israel is a small country, with an economy that responds as much to what happens outside as to what its government decides. Its government, like many others, can exercise a veto over what the United States demands, but it had better not exercise that veto too often, or too explicitly.

The mitzvah of giving Tzedaka is unique in the sense that not only do others benefit from this act of kindness, but you do as well. Aside from the mitzvah that you receive, Hashem promises that if we help others, he will surely help us. It is customary to give Tzedaka before we light the Shabbat candles. So, as we enter Shabbat (our time of spiritual uplifting and resting from our week's work) let us pause for a moment, reflect on this idea and give Tzedaka to our second home, Hebrew Day. Besides giving Tzedaka every week before Shabbat, another time when it is extra special to carry out this mitzvah is on Purim. Aside from the joy and happiness we experience on Purim, we are commanded to remember those less fortunate than ourselves.
We hope that you will help us by filling up this Tzedaka box and returning it to the school on Purim. As part of our community outreach program, several Tzedaka boxes will be placed in various shuls, Judaic and Kosher stores around San Diego so look out for them!

An unsolicited plan for Mideast peace

JERUSALEM—Australia is again punching above its weight in the global Jewish community with ECAJ president Robert Goot elected vice-president of the World Jewish Congress (WJC).Goot was voted onto WJC's executive committee at the organisation's 13th Plenary Assembly in Jerusalem last week.

Goot's election comes just over a year after the ECAJ rejoined the WJC.  The Australian organisation withdrew its membership in 2006 amid concerns over the financial practices of the WJC and its refusal to withdraw a $7.5 million libel suit against Australian born Jewish community leader Isi Leibler, a trenchant critic of the body at the time.

Goot said his election as vice-president is "testament to the high regard in which the Australian Jewish community and the ECAJ is held i n the international Jewish community."

Australia was represented at the assembly by a full delegation of 10 with four observers. The majority of the Australian delegation was comprised of Australian university students currently in Israel.

The Plenary assembly adopted a resolution expressing solidarity with Israel, which expressly applauded the stand taken by the Australian Government during the recent Gaza operation.

Dissident Jewish professors make waves

CANBERRA—Jewih leaders have slammed the recent establishment by two Jewish Australian academics of the Committee to Dismantle Zionism, which accuses Israel of genocide.

Academics John Docker and Ned Curthoys, from the Australian National University in Canberra, said they established the committee last month to "repudiate Israel's claim that it acts in the name of Jews the world over."

"We deplore the 'myth of Israel' as perpetual victim and rational peace-seeker," the pair released in a statement.

"It seems clear to us that Israel ...  is a genocidal settler colonial society that, since its founding in 1948, continually seeks to destroy the foundations of life of the indigenous Palestinians."
In another statement posted under the title "How to dismantle Zionism in a few easy steps" on Independent Australian Jewish Voices co-founder Antony Loewenstein's blog, the pair further clarified the committee's aims by declaring the idea of a Jewish state to be "absurd, unjust and ultimately untenable.”

Among the committee's goals is supporting the cultural and economic boycott of Israel, urging Diaspora Jews to renounce the Jewish right of return and endorsing the "unconditional right for Palestinian refugees ... to return to their homes.”

In a recent inteview, Curthoys said: "I am only one of a number of Jewish voices ... who no longer believes that Israel's aggressive territorial nationalism can ever bring peace to the Middle East or long-term security to its various peoples".

The duo’s comments have sparked the ire of Jewish leaders, who have called their statements "unsubstantiated" and "extreme.”

Executive Council of Australian Jewry president Robert Goot said, "The views expressed by this self-appointed father and son pseudo-academic committee of two are so contemptible and so far removed from reality, fact and rational thought that they do not warrant further ­consideration."

Zionist Federation of Australia president Philip Chester said that while he was "disappointed" the statements came from people of the Jewish faith, he does not believe their views represent the mainstream view of the Jewish community.

"Because these views are so marginal and these people are not part of ... any responsible communal position, I don't believe that they will attract any significant following within the community," he said.

"Our community was very understanding and supportive of the Gaza operation, as it understood that Israelis could not continue to live with constant, unrelenting bombardment from Hamas in Gaza. Indeed, most ... western countries also understood why Israel had to undertake this operation."

Australia Day honours for Jewish community members

CANBERRA - A mountain climber, a Supreme Court judge and community stalwarts are among the Jewish recipients of Australia Day honours.

Justice Ronald Sackville, Cheryl Bart, Michael Naphtali, the late Dr Philip Opas, Andrew Havas, Ivan Kayne, Raymond Kassel, Ian Samuel and the late Max Wahlhaus were all honoured.

Among the Officers of the Order of Australia (AO) awardees was Sydney's Justice Sackville, who was honoured for his service to the Australian judicial system.

"I have mixed emotions," Sackville said. "It's great to be honoured in this way, and I'm naturally pleased. But I'm saddened my daughter is not here to share the occasion."
Sackville's daughter, Tanya, died tragically at aged 37 in 2007.

Sydney executive and avid mountain climber Cheryl Bart received an AO for her service to the economic and cultural development of South Australia and to sport. Bart made international headlines in May 2008 when she and her daughter, Nikki, scaled Mount Everest. They became the first mother/daughter duo to climb the world's seven highest summits.

A Member of the Order of Australia (AM) was awarded to Michael Naphtali, the Jewish National Fund (JNF) Australia immediate past president, for his service to the community.

The late Dr Philip Opas, a former Melbourne QC, also received an AM for services to the law.

Among Medals of the Order of Australia (OAM) recipients was Andrew Havas, the chair of Courage to Care, for service to the community.

Sydney-based Raymond Kassel, a Montefiore Home volunteer, also earned an OAM, as did Ivan Kayne, the manager of Josie's Opportunity Shop in Melbourne.

Melbourne's Ian Samuel was awarded an OAM for service to the community through the promotion of tolerance and social justice.

The late Max Wahlhaus, a former Sydney Academy BJE education director, also received an OAM for service to education.

Australian honours are awarded twice a year on Australia Day and Queen's Birthday.

Surgeon becomes first Jewish general in 50 Years

CANBERRA - Jeffrey Rosenfeld joined illustrious company this month when he was promoted to Major
General of the Australian Army. Major General Rosenfeld became just the third Jewish Australian to rise to the rank.

He follows in the footsteps of General Sir John Monash and Major General Paul Cullen."I'm in pretty august company," Rosenfeld said. "It is a great honour and a privilege."

Rosenfeld, 56, is also the head of the Department of Surgery at Melbourne's Monash University and director of the Department of Neurosurgery at The Alfred Hospital.

He received the promotion at a ceremony in Canberra earlier this month attended by his wife and two of his three children.

"I was absolutely over-the-moon when I was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. I thought that was the ultimate, I thought I would never go any further," he said.

Rosenfeld admitted that his various roles can be a bit of a "juggle" and paid tribute to his wife Debbie, a pediatrician.

"I couldn't have done what I've done without her," he said. "She deserves part of this rank ... she's a general too."

When he joined the Army Reserve in 1984, Rosenfeld said he did it to serve his country, rather than to climb to lofty military heights."It's been a very exciting second career," he said. "I've met a lot of new people that I otherwise wouldn't have met."

Rosenfeld, who is also the Surgeon General for Defence Health Reserves, has served in Rwanda, East Timor, Bougainville, Solomon Islands and was most recently deployed to Iraq in 2004.

For him, the decision to serve his country was inspired purely by patriotism."It's a very good thing for a Jewish person to aspire to in terms of serving their country," he said.

"Putting on the uniform of their country is really the highest calling of an Australian citizen, you are there to defend your country, in my case defending the country by looking after the troops who are fighting for our freedom," he said.

Rosenfeld is the first Jewish Australian to be appointed to the high rank in more than 50 years.Monash, a cousin of Rosenfeld's, was the first Jewish Australian of that rank. To this day, Monash is considered one of Australia's foremost military minds.Cullen, who died in 2007, was the second Jewish Australian Major General. He served in World War II and was a highly regarded infantry commander.

He fought on the battlefields of the Middle East and was later deployed to Papua New Guinea where he fought against the Japanese.

Child prodigy stars at Yeshiva gala

SYDNEY - He began playing the keyboard at age three and was composing music by five. Since then, he's led symphony orchestras, appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show and shared the stage with musicians such as Beyonce and Patti Labelle -- all by the age of seven.

Now US-based child prodigy Ethan Bortnick is set to bring his act to Australia when he fronts The Yeshiva Centre's annual gala dinner next month.

He will be joined on stage by 13-year-old Jewish Perth singer Troye Sivan, who appeared in the film X-Men Origins: Wolverine and most recently starred in Oshy Tugendhaft's Celebration 60.

The gala event will be held at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre in Darling Harbour on Tuesday, February 17 at 6.30pm. But unlike previous years, organisers said this year's event promised to offer a twist. It will coincide with the seven-year cycle of Hakhel, which is a biblical practice of assembling Jewish people together to promote unity. This year there will be no appeal for funds on the night.

The Yeshiva's Rabbi Dovid Slavin said Bortnick embodied the spirit of the time-honoured tradition.
"This great gift of talent that Hashem has given him, he's shared with people and he will bring people together in the spirit of this year's celebration of Hakhel. It's a mitzvah that we at the Yeshiva feel very much at the centre of," Rabbi Slavin said.

The Yeshiva Centre, founded in 1956, is the headquarters of the Chabad-Lubavitch movement in NSW. It is the hub for numerous community and social services, including the Yeshiva Gedola Rabbinical College, Yeshiva College Bondi and Our Big Kitchen, which provides nourishment for families in distress.

Expansion of kosher eateries

MELBOURNE- The kosher community is set to acquire two new restaurants, following the closure of the Park Grill restaurant late last year. It is understood the first of the new restaurants, planned to open in the coming weeks, will be located on Kooyong Road between Balaclava Road and Inkerman Street - an area that is considered the geographical heart of Melbourne.

The new restaurant, Flame, which is co-owned by the proprietors of the nearby cafe and take-away shop, Chick Chicken, will be pareve and specialise in fish.
After closing in late 2007, Glick's 2 fleishig restaurant on Carlisle Street is set to be renovated, revamped and reopened after Pesach.

"We have invested more money into the restaurant being technologically savvy, so people can order online," managing director of Glick's Bakery, Nathan Glick, said.

"It will be more of a New York-style deli concept, where we will serve things like pastrami on rye and also sell food for Shabbat."

Kosher Australia's Yankel Wajsbort also confirmed that a number of other individuals had made initial inquiries with Kosher Australia about the early planning stages of further new kosher eateries.
While late last year saw the closure of the Park Grill, it also saw the opening of the more casual Benny's Burgers in Ripponlea, located on Glen Eira Avenue.

Junior Carnival great success

SYDNEY - Maccabbi Junior Carnival in Sydney came to a close on January 21 and the carnival's best performers were honoured.

Victorians Gabriella Kane, Daniel Halprin and Jamie Levin sharing the Nathan Hofbauer Award for carnival spirit and sportsmanship.

New South Wales' best male sportsman went to Jeremy Engel for basketball and mixed netball and best sportswomen was shared between twins Gaby and Jenna Chertkow for girls' netball.

The David Salinger Memorial Award for sportsmanship, participation, Maccabi spirit and helping out was awarded to Elizabeth Herman.

Queensland's awards for outstanding competitors went to Max Shochet and Raquel Toren.
Western Australia's Ryan Burns Memorial Award was presented to Russell Goldblatt while the Justin Sandler Memorial Award for sportsmanship went to Zak Fleisher.

New Zealand awards went to Benji Smith for sportsmanship and team spirit, Zanetta Solnik for
best netballer and both William Blaschke and Solomon Rainbow for most outstanding performance.
The 28th Junior Carnival will be held in Perth in 2010.


Heat wave postpones start of school year

MELBOURNE - Splashes and squeals can be heard over back fences, there has been a run on kosher ice-cream and everyone has admitted to being a little shvitzy. ot must be summer in the city.

This week, Melburnians are sweltering through a once-in-a-lifetime heat wave with three consecutive days temperature hovering around 44 degrees centigrade and the Jewish community is dealing with it in its own unique way.

In a cradle-to-grave approach, both Gilly's Early Learning Centre and Emmy Monash Aged Care handed out icy poles this week.

According to Talli Kimelman, director of Gilly's, Jewish tots are stripping off to keep cool.
Fortunately, the same is not happening at Emmy Monash, where residents have been cleverly advised to wear light clothing.

In what initially seemed like an early muck-up day prank, Mount Scopus College has delayed the start of school.

Principal Rabbi James Kennard confirmed  that, given reports of Melbourne's longest and most serious heatwave in a century, the school will resume on Monday rather than Friday as originally scheduled.

"I thought it appropriate to put off the start of term," Rabbi Kennard said.

And as with all Jewish events, the summer heatwave needs an appropriate menu. David Kraus, from Kraus Foods, said dips and ice-cream are diving off the shelves.He recommends getting in early for summer staples, particularly lemon and raspberry sorbets, which are going like hot cakes.

“Over hill, over dale” might as well be the theme song of the Young Jewish Couples’ Club of the Tifereth Israel Synagogue Sunday night, August  17, when the group will sponsor a fun-filled two hour hayride, commencing at Palomar Stables on Friar Road.

Jean Zisson will entertain the riders with her guitar and will also accompany their singing. Coffee, cake, dancing, and general merry-making will follow the ride.  Participants are asked to bring their own box lunches.

Hebrew Home Gets Set for ‘Maisel Day’

Sunday, August 10th from 2 to 5 p.m. will be the Second Annual Maisel Day for the Hebrew Home for the Age.

Mr. Max Maisel has received several lovely door prizes for the event and the gorgeous Banquet Cloth made and donated by his niece, Mrs. Ben Urbach, will be given to some lucky person with the lucky number.

The admission tickets are $1.00 per couple and include everything for the afternoon—a fine program is arranged—home-made refreshments—and a pleasant afternoon is assured. The Auxiliary has just purchased some new lawn furniture for the Home Gardens and have voted a contribution of $1000.00 to the General Fund for the Home.

Members of the Beth Jacob Ladies Auxiliary are sponsoring a wedding shower in honor of the coming nuptials of Miss Lorraine Komins, daughter of Mrs. Lavena Komins and Mr. Robert Penn, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Penn, Chula Vista.  Everyone is cordially invited to the shower at Beth Jacob Center Auditorium on Tuesday, August 12, at 8:00 p.m., Mrs. Anna Shelley, Auxiliary President, has announced.


T.Y.Lers to Attend Asilomar Conference

Accompanied by Rabbi and Mrs. Morton J. Cohn, the officers of the Temple Youth League have left for the annual Jewish Youth Conference at Asilomar.  The Conference are from August 8th to 17th and are under the joint auspices of the Western Association of Reform Rabbis and the Union of American Hebrew Congregations.

Representing T.Y.L. among the 200 campers from Reform youth groups along the entire coast are: Joyce Addleson, Jane Cohn, Dick Godes, Aaron Kolky, Burton Sharpe and Linda Solof.  Aaron Kolky was president of the 1951 J.Y.C. Camp.  Burt Sharpe, a national board member, is attending for the third time and will be a counselor.

The Temple Sisterhood has provided paid camperships for these young people as rewards for their leadership in T.Y.L. activities. 

Rabbi Cohn is a member of the five-man camp commission.  He will give a course of study and also preach at camp chapel services.

At its recent installation dance T.Y.L. installed the following officers: Dick Godes, Pres.; Linda Solof, Vice-Pres.; Joyce Addleson, rec. Sec.; Jane Cohn, Corr. Sec.; and Esther Lustig, Treas.


Heart Assn. Elects New Board Members

The Board of directors of the San Diego County Heart Association at their meeting elected the following citizens of San Diego County to membership on the Board of Directors to serve during the Fiscal Years ending 1953-54 and 55:  Nathan Baranov, A.C. Bisher, the Most Rev. Charles F. Buddy, Edwin C. Campbell, Elliott Cushman,  Henry F. Hansen, George H. Langworthy, Harvey Lewis Jr., Max Osslo, Charles Salik, D.W. Vanassen, D.D.S., Dr. John W. Flaiz, Dr. Lee Monroe, Dr. Paul H. Morton, Dr. John Steelquist.

The 1953 campaign goal was set at $60,000 to be raised during the month of February, which is National Heart Month throughout the United States.  This is an increase of $10,000 over the goal of 1952, which was $50,000, and was over-subscribed by approximately 25 percent.

Dr. Anton S. Yuskis, President of the county Heart Association, announced new committee appointments as follows: Anton S. Yuskis, M.D., Chairman of the Executive Committee; S.J. McClendon, M.D., Chairman of the Scientific Council; Murray D. Goodrich, Chairman of the Program Committee; W.C. Osborn, Chairman of the Budget Committee; Capt. D.W. Hardin, Chairman of the Legal Committee.

Plans are under way for the selection for a campaign chairman for the 1953 campaign.  Announcement will be made shortly of the person selected.

Beth Jacob Congregation and Ladies’ Auxiliary will jointly sponsor a picnic at Pepper Grove, Balboa Park, on Sunday August 10, according to Abe A. Abramson and Mrs. Anna Shelley, presidents.

All members and friends are cordially invited to spend a pleasant afternoon together.  There will be plenty of activities and fun for the old and young, as well as lots of delicious food.

Make it a date—Sunday, August 10, at Pepper Grove.
