K Rabbi Arnold Kopikis had expected to have at least one more meeting with the negotiating committee of Ner Tamid Synagogue over his contract, but, after congregants received a letter from Kopikis outlining the situation from his standpoint, the Conservative congregation's board voted to terminate such discussions.  Kopikis had been the spiritual leader at Ner Tamid for seven years.

M Patti Malmuth,
a highly respected professional, advises: "After three years as an independent public relations consultant at the JCC, I am moving on to another career."  Speaking as one privileged to have regular news dealings with her, she did a fine job.

S Shari and Fred Schenk
will be joint recipients of the Jewish National Fund's "Tree of Life Award" to be presented at a dinner Saturday, Nov. 18, at the Torrey Pines Hilton. Mitch Simon, JNF's  San Diego regional president, explained that "the Tree of Life™ Award was established by JNF to honor citizens who exemplify a dedication to improving the quality of life for their fellow citizens and who have made a noteworthy contribution to their community. The Schenks' involvement in both the Jewish and non-Jewish community has made them worthy recipients of this award."

Julie Smith,
daughter of San Diego County Assessor Greg Smith and Arlette Smith, is making aliyah to Israel. "I'm not leaving because I dislike America,” Smith told Sandi Dolbee, the religion and ethics writer of The San Diego Union-Tribune, in an interview published August 6. “I'm leaving because I like Israel.” Noting that Julie expects to live near the now-explosive Lebanese border, mother Arlette told Dolbee:  “I'm very proud of her passion, but I'm very nervous. The thought that my daughter's going to be right in the middle of everything, as a mom, I'm quite worried.”
